Francesco Bocchini is among the very few contemporary authors who work with tinplated sheet metal. With hands that look like terracotta, the-she model is made to be as ductile as a piece of wood and light as papier mâché before it is painted in oil. She is moulded in shapes that are plausible although non-existent in nature, but nevertheless inspired by it. Complying with the great game (and drama) of art, the artist creates metaphors of reality that are truer than the True. And inasmuch as creation is perennially underway (Genesis, cap. 2), Bocchini, too, is constantly moving, in and out from his mechanical atelier-factory just outside Forlì. Bocchini’s figurative imaginary is made up of complex mechanisms and intricate vegetation in copper, iron and zinc threads created by the author through modules broken up in dozens of pieces that are successively reassembled so as to be hung on the wall in unique and original patterns. In this creative process, good-natured and steadfast Bocchini seeks unity in diversity, harmony in disorder, giving vibrancy of life to a material that is in itself humble and insignificant. His original and adopted world continues to be the Romagna, the land of ripe talents and poets, of well-mannered lunatics and surrealist geniuses, of Federico Fellini and Tonino Guerra. Bocchini’s vision, though, is less brazen and the way he feels is more profound and reserved. I chose for the inauguration of “Campari Wall” Bocchini’s Philosophical tree (2013) consisting of 18 elements and inspired by the ten Sephirot of the Jewish Kabbalah. A work only apparently simple, it can be read at various levels: formal, emotional and spiritual. The ten numerical ciphers of the Sephirot, like ten tales and ten precious stones, are hidden in the sculpture, while on the five red disks that author has placed words as if they were clues, wishes, treasures to be kept. Wisdom as the seed of all things; intelligence superior matrix; perseverance victory; love grace good. I chose this work by Bocchini because it transmits a playful emotion and a message of hope. It is a story about the happiness of being, which as Boris Pasternak once said, should be the end of all good works of art. |
